About The breed

History —The standard schnauzer originated in Germany around the early 1900's. They were originally bred to herd, guard, kill vermin, and be a companion dog of a traveling people. They were used during WWII in the German Army and other military operations. They are still used in police work today. They have been depicted in artwork in Germany that can still be seen today in many forms. Standard schnauzers are the original breed. Giant and Minature schnauzers were bred to other breeds from the original standard schnauzer to get their size and body type. Temperament is totally different between the standard and miniature for certain.

Breed Type — Standard schnauzers are highly intelligent quick learning dogs. With proper structure, they have a typical working dog movement and are very agile making them able to jump 6 feet plus straight up from a stand still. They are not for a person who wants a dog who takes little care or just lies around. This is a dog for an active family and will want to go everywhere the family does and also require a lot of mind stimulation. They weigh between 30 and 50 pounds and stand 17 to 20 inches at the withers (shoulder). These dogs live until the average age of 12 to  15, but have been known to live longer.

Coat — They have a double coat consisting of a soft undercoat and a harsh outer coat. It is the outer coat "or guard coat" that gives them the beautiful pepper and salt color which can vary in shades from very washed out to almost black. They also come in black, but we do not breed that color. If clipped, this dog will not shed, however, a clipped coat does not hold in dander which is what most people are allergic to. Clipping the coat promotes the growth of the undercoat only. We have found the clipped coat to affect our allergies where a stripped coat does not. We will be happy to discuss this further with anyone who has questions regarding the breed’s “hypo-allergic” reputation.
